Alltech’s analysis of Canadian feed ingredients highlights multiple presences and the need for feed testing, says Dr. Alexandra Weaver, mycotoxing management technical specialist with Alltech. The company showed results from a series of samples taken during the 2017 harbest in a webinar on Wednesday. The varied weather patterns in different parts of Canada contributed to a range of results that could lead to a high risk for some animal producers.

Tom Lorenzen joined Alltech in 2008 after working five years with a feed ingredient company, where he was responsible for identifying non-nutritional bottlenecks that affect quality milk production and performance. After attending University of Wisconsin-Platteville, he taught agriculture for six years at Orfordville High School before selling TMR mixers and then working as a nutritionist for a decade. He later worked for Alliant Energy searching for stray voltage on farms and then for Bou-Matic, where he developed their udder health and sanitation program.

Livestock producers are urged to test feed for toxins and mold that can cause cattle to lose weight and lead to reduced milk production. Farmers should be testing their grains and forages for mycotoxins before feeding them to livestock, says an animal nutrition company. Canadian harvest samples submitted for Alltech’s 2017 analysis show that grains and forages contained mixtures of mycotoxins such as deoxynivalenol (DON), zearalenone (ZEA) and T-2/HT-2.
