Alltech Crop Science acquires Ideagro, leader in agri-food research and development

Submitted by jnorrie on Mon, 01/16/2023 - 07:00

Strengthening its commitment to Working Together for a Planet of Plenty™, Alltech Crop Science has acquired Ideagro, based in Murcia, Spain. This partnership joins two leading platforms to accelerate soil and crop research, and to enhance biological and other microorganism-based offerings to Alltech Crop Science customers throughout the world.

“We are excited to announce that Ideagro has joined the Alltech Crop Science global team, providing us with a partner who shares our vision and significantly scaling our research capabilities,” said Andy Thomas, CEO of Alltech Crop Science. "This is the strengthening of a longstanding partnership. We have worked closely with the Ideagro team since their founding 11 years ago.”

Ideagro is a leader in agri-food research and development with a team of more than 20 scientists. It is committed to improving the productivity and profitability of agricultural systems. Its expertise in developing beneficial organisms for soil aids the growth of crops, reduces the impact of chemical inputs and helps plants to resist biotic and abiotic stress. Ideagro’s analytical capabilities, with special emphasis on in-vitro research, phytopathology, soil dynamics and microorganisms, further enable growers to identify microorganisms and quantify enzymatic activity in the soil.

“We are facing a great growth opportunity for Ideagro because we are going to have better means and more technological capacity to develop our research, which will now have a global projection,” said Pedro Palazón, CEO of Ideagro. “We will no longer only study the soils of the Iberian Peninsula, but we will work with soils from all over the world to achieve more sustainable and environmentally friendly agriculture.”

Ideagro has state-of-the-art laboratories and experimental research stations and fields for carrying out trials in Spain. To date, the company has researched more than 90 different crops and performed more than 10,000 physicochemical and biological analyses. This has led to the development of new agricultural strategies based on microorganisms.

Ideagro’s three laboratories are fully equipped with the latest technologies to focus on nutraceuticals, phytopathology, research and development and molecular biology. Its services include:

  • Precise diagnoses, identification and semi-quantification of more than 290 microorganisms at the species level in different crops. Through the development of multispecific detection kits, it can simultaneously detect up to 40 pathogenic microorganisms in a single sample, with results in 24-48 hours.
  • Molecular identification of microorganisms as well as genetic characterization of specific strains and determination of pathotypes of a pathogen.
  • Analysis of nematodes.
  • Design of specific probes for specific microorganisms. As a result, Ideagro is able to detect specific microorganisms in soil, water, plant material and biostimulants.
  • Mycotoxin analyses. With more than 15,000 analyses carried out to date, Ideagro can identify and quantify the risks of aflatoxin B1, fumonisins, zearalenone and deoxynivalenol trichothecenes and T2 toxin. It provides monthly data on mycotoxin contamination in animal feed and in the main crops of the Spanish and European markets.

Ideagro is accredited by MAPAMA (EOR 82/13) and has ISO 9001:2015 certification. In June 2021, it was named a Reference Regional Laboratory by GLOSOLAN, the Global Soil Laboratory division of the FAO.

“The combination of the Ideagro expertise with the reach and scale of Alltech will allow us to extend world-leading understanding of the interface between soil, crop, animal and human health to the global market,” said Andy Thomas, CEO of Alltech Crop Science. “The potential implications of these insights cannot be understated as we endeavor to improve the vitality of our global food system, from the ground up.”

Dairy Herd Management: How Often Are You Training and Monitoring Procedural Drift?

Submitted by jnorrie on Thu, 01/12/2023 - 12:00

Often the first focus of a dairy isn’t on human resources, but more importantly on the day-to-day tasks that are crucial for caring for livestock. Jorge Delgado, an on-farm specialist with Alltech, strongly encourages producers to start dedicating time and effort to this area.

Preparation for calving begins now

Submitted by rjones on Thu, 12/15/2022 - 11:20

Late lactation is an important time for those farms in a block calving situation. The 6 weeks before dry off is an important time and while nutrition, minerals and management all play a key role in the dry cow another cornerstone is body condition score (BCS).

The target at calving should be 3-3.25 depending on you cow type but this should not just be the target at calving but also at dry off. Cows are more efficient at putting on condition now than in the dry period. We should be maintaining them during the dry period and especially to prevent cows from putting on condition beyond 3.25. This not alone could lead to calving issues but also metabolic issues around calving, such as milk fever and retaining membranes. In fact, cows are up to 9 times more likely to suffer this if they are over conditioned.

On top of this cows that are over conditioned at calving can have 30% lower dry matter intake post calving. This at a time when a cow is already struggling for intake and avoid severe negative energy balance (NEB).

Preparing for any dry cow period needs planning and over many years KEENAN has used its mechanical and technical know how to support dry cows during this period. Grass silage even when poor in quality is very good for dry cows and on top of this an over consumption of this feed can lead to cows putting on up to 1 BCS score during the dry period. Dilution of the quality of this diet using low energy feed such has straw has been the corner stone of the KEENAN controlled energy high fibre diet.

The mechanics of the KEENAN has allowed the incorporation of high quantities of straw or long material to the mix in a consistent manner. Earlier research of these diet on up to 25,000 cows in several countries has shown major health benefits in the avoidance of metabolic issues by as much as 50-80% resulting in an average benefit per cow of €51.

While we balance the diet for energy, protein, and minerals the measurement of dry matter intake is key and sometimes overlooked as the cause and solution to dry cow issues on many farms. The KEENAN controller allows the measure and monitoring of dry matter intake daily and ensured correct and accurate delivery thereafter.

Bridging the Late Lactation Gap

Submitted by rjones on Thu, 12/15/2022 - 10:43

October

Maintaining milk yield is of the utmost importance as we head into late lactation. Losing milk yield at this time of the year is not alone a loss of income but may also be a sign that cows are not being fed properly.

With a milk price of over 60c/l and more for higher solids, we need to make sure yield is not dropping faster that we would like it to. Looking after the intake of the animal at this time of year will mean everything else should look after itself. Work carried out in UCD Lyons Estate has shown that cows that are supplemented in late lactation (versus pasture only) had better milk production, body condition and are more feed efficient.

Body condition is also a vital pillar of any production system and for cows in late lactation now is the time to place them in their calving condition of 3-3.25. Cows are more efficient at putting on body condition now and the added supplement will also generate a return as opposed to in the dry period.

Beyond the basic requirement of approximately 0.11kg of concentrate per kilo of milk for cows out on pasture full time or 0.22kg of concentrate per kilo of milk with cows in by night, then cows will need a forage added to the diet. For example, a cow still producing 15kg of milk will be on 3-4kg of concentrate and beyond this will require some forage to satisfy dry matter intake.

The use of buffer or supplementary feeding at this time of year is just as important as it is in springtime and early lactation. At KEENAN we have seen several key benefits when it comes to buffer feeding.

  • Because all feed cost has increased, the use of home-grown forage in conjunction with concentrate can supply a cost-effective supplement

  • A forage-based supplement is more in keeping with the rumen health of the animal

  • Feed wastage is a major loss of efficiency and major driver of cost on farm. The measurement and weighing of what the cow requires through the KEENAN controller is a key attribute

  • Precision mixing through the KEENAN means that every cow gets exactly what has been prescribed is another key feature. Consistency of diet means consistency of milk production.

Using efficiency to drive profitability during uncertain times

Submitted by rjones on Thu, 11/17/2022 - 07:35

Unprecedented increases in farm input prices, mainly feed, fertiliser and energy, have created a lot of concern for farmers. Predictions made early in the year have been further revised due to the conflict in Ukraine and its financial and supply repercussions.

However, while farmers are worried, KEENAN believes that there are reasons to be optimistic too. There are many ways that farmers can increase productivity and efficiencies on-farm, while meeting their sustainability objectives.

Egalis®

Submitted by cewert on Tue, 11/15/2022 - 11:04

Tractor collecting silageSilage inoculants to maximize nutrient and dry matter protection

We know that silage-making is at the core of what you do. However, not all of the silage produced will make it to the feed passage. From fresh crop to harvest and through storage, the feed value drops, as does the physical quantity of the silage — by as much as 25%! This can hurt animal performance and increase your feed costs.

Egalis® is a new range of high-quality silage inoculants from Alltech® that maximizes nutrient quality retention and reduces dry matter loss. This means you have more silage to feed, better silage to feed and fewer concerns about wasting feed. Through enhanced palatability and increased dry matter intake, Egalis contributes to more profitable milk and meat production.

The Egalis range of silage inoculants

Egalis drives quick and proper fermentation, which helps epiphytic bacteria control fermentation through the use of other specific bacteria.

The Egalis product line is available in several variations and packaging options for farms of all sizes to provide you the flexibility and ease of application needed for a stress-free silage season.

<>Technical Description

Fermentation is at the core of what we do at Alltech, and silage-making happens to be the largest industrial fermentation process around the world. The Egalis range of products brings together our more than four decades of expertise in fermentation, utilizing strains of bacteria that were specifically selected by our scientists to maximize nutrient and dry matter protection and improve animal performance.

Together with our on-farm support team and through our range of analytical services, we help improve fermentation to produce quality silage, enabling you to hold on to more of what you grow, from field to feed passage.

The basics of fermentation

Fermentation is loosely defined as the breakdown of a substance by bacteria, yeast or other microorganisms. In silage, a natural fermentation process, which takes place in the absence of oxygen, breaks down the plant sugars in the forage crop and converts them into acids. These acids drop the pH of the silage and help prevent the development of molds and fungi.

Keys to fermentation:

  1. A reduced amount of oxygen present
  2. Adequate sugar levels and carbohydrates to promote bacterial activity
  3. Appropriate composition and temperature and suitable numbers of microbial bacteria
  4. Proper harvest moisture

The role of Egalis

Suitable for use on all forages, Egalis efficiently and rapidly drives fermentation to a stable, final pH. It is comprised of specific strains of Lactobacillus plantarum and Pediococcus pentosaceus, which work in conjunction to rapidly lower the pH to a more even and suitable number. This more controlled fermentation offers more consistent and better-quality silage for your animals, which helps you maintain optimal animal performance.

Benefits of Egalis:

  • Maximizes forage quality
  • Aids in nutrient retention
  • Reduces dry matter losses
  • Drives sustainable feed usage
