On Monday, August 10, several communities across Iowa were devastated by an extreme weather event known as a derecho, with wind gusts now estimated to have reached a peak speed of 140 miles-per-hour. The storm slammed the Midwest with straight line winds, gaining strength as it plowed through Iowa farm fields, flattening corn and destroying grain bins filled with tens of millions of bushels of the previous year’s harvest.
What had looked like a record corn crop will now be a deep loss for many. A staggering amount — more than 14 million estimated acres — of Iowa’s crop land was destroyed. Many homes and outbuildings were also significantly damaged.
The Iowa Derecho Devastation Relief Fund will help to provide goods and services to farmers and their local communities who have been directly impacted, coordinated on the ground by Alltech and Hubbard Feeds area representatives. Alltech will be matching donations dollar-for-dollar.*
