Young Animal Scientist Award 2008 Rules and Regulations

CHAPTER I
GENERAL

Article 1 – The Young Animal Scientist of the Year was established by Alltech Inc., and is governed by the following rules and regulations.

Article 2 – Alltech has created the Young Animal Scientist of the Year Award to promote research and develop talent among undergraduate students from various universities throughout the world.

Paragraph 1 – This program benefits future professionals and strengthens the relationship among industry, undergraduate students, professionals and researchers.

Paragraph 2 – The award is aimed at undergraduate students of animal science, dairy science, veterinary science or related disciplines.

Paragraph 3 – The participation of Alltech employees or any of his/her relatives, is not allowed.

 

CHAPTER II
PHASES

Phase 1 – Regional Level
Participating students will submit their papers to a team of judges from the industry and Alltech.
Regional winners will move on to global competitions. Regional competitions will take place within the following areas: North America, Latin America, Europe and Asia-Pacific.

Phase 2 (Final) – Global Level
The winning student from each region will move on to the Global Competition to be held at Alltech’s Global Headquarters in Kentucky, USA. At this level, students must prepare a poster and a 15-minute presentation based on their original paper topic.
 

CHAPTER III
REQUIREMENTS

Phase 1 – Regional Level - Papers
In the first phase students must write a scientific paper or literature review, in English, of approximately 3000-3500 words based on a topic involving an animal feed issue that has been pre-approved or suggested on the Alltech website. The papers submitted cannot be previously published in any research journal.

Phase 2 – Global Level – Poster and presentation

Poster

  • Principles of simplicity and clarity apply to both poster and slide presentations.
  • The story should proceed logically, with headings indicating sections: Introduction, Objective(s), Materials and Methods, Results, Summary, and Conclusions.
  • Use of photos and/or flow charts are encouraged. Graphs should have titles, the axes should be named, and units should be quantified.
  • Tables should also be titled.
  • Posters should include a small, professional picture of the author near the title.

Presentation

  • Presentations should be based on the original paper submitted for the competition. Sound experimental design and interpretation are essential. PowerPoint slides are required.
  • Students must be prepared to produce and present their research in English.
     

CHAPTER IV
PRIZES

Article 4 – Three (3) candidates at the first level (phase) and one (1) candidate at the second level (phase) will be awarded prizes.

Article 5 – Prizes will include the following:

Phase 1 – Regional Level

1st Place: $1000 USD. One (1) round trip ticket, lodging, and registration at Alltech’s International Feed Industry Symposium in Lexington, Kentucky, USA in May 2007. Alltech will define the airline and the hotel. Presentation of poster at Alltech’s International Symposium in 2007
2nd Place: $1000 USD
3rd Place: $500 USD

Phase 2 – Global Level

1st Place: $5000 USD (to student only). Trophy.

The prizewinners will be responsible for any responsibilities and expenses related to passport, visa, and travel insurance. Alltech will not be liable for potential problems, particularly those of legal nature or relative to customs, involving the prizewinners.

  • Prize winning participants must provide a valid national ID number for prize payment, and should allow 90 days from that date for payment.
  • Prize winning participants agree to allow Alltech to use their names, images, video containing the participants and their projects, and university affiliations in future promotional materials.
  • Applicants must be present at the awards ceremony to win.

2nd Place: $2000 USD, Plaque of recognition

The remaining two finalists will receive a plaque in recognition of their efforts.

Article 6 – All four finalists, whose registration is accepted according to these regulations, will receive a Recognition Certificate.
 

CHAPTER V
THEMES

Article 7 – Suggested topics will be provided at www.alltech.com/yas . Additional topics may be submitted for approval or counseling to youngscientist@alltech.com.

Article 8 – Critical reviews, essays, dissertations, student research projects and similar papers are allowed to compete, while taking into account the relevancy to the topic, and matching the other requirements.
 

CHAPTER VI
REGISTRATION

Article 10 – Each candidate must submit a Registration Form by December 14, 2007, which is available on Alltech’s website. Forms may be submitted through the website only.

 

CHAPTER VII
PAPER SUBMISSION

Article 11 – Papers must be submitted by uploading a Microsoft Word document or by being emailed to youngscientist@alltech.com by January 18, 2008.

Paragraph 1 – In order to be accepted, it is mandatory that the following document accompany the paper:

a) An abstract of a maximum of two hundred and fifty (250) words.

Article 12 – The papers must be individually written by the candidate.

Article 13 - Submission of the enrollment form and paper imply the agreement and the acceptance of the clauses and conditions of the present rules and regulations by the candidate.

Article 14 – Each candidate is fully responsible for the integrity of the information contained in the enrollment form.

Article 15 – Incomplete submissions will not be accepted.
 

CHAPTER VIII
JURY

Article 16 – The regional winners will be chosen by a panel of judges specially designated for this purpose. The jury will be appointed by Alltech.

Article 17 – The global panel of judges will consist of at least four (4) members, which may consist of professors, researchers and/or industry leaders. There will be at least one judge to represent each region: North America, Latin America, Europe/Africa and Asia Pacific.

Article 18 – Alltech will not release grades or classifications of any papers submitted outside of the prizes awarded. The criteria by which students are evaluated can be researched online.

Article 19 – The decisions of the judges are not susceptible to appeals or impugnation during any stage of the contest.
 

CHAPTER IX
ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE RESULTS

Article 20 – Contest results will be announced by Alltech at awards ceremonies at the Regional level, on February 23, 2008. The global winner’s prize will be awarded at Alltech’s Symposium in April 2008.

Article 21 – Regional and global winners of Alltech’s Young Animal Scientist award will also be listed on Alltech’s website.

Article 22 – Each candidate is responsible for maintaining his/her address and contact information with Alltech.

Article 23 – The winner should be present at the awards ceremony. If not, he/she risks immediate disqualification.

Article 24 – Each regional winner must appear before the judging panel in Lexington, Kentucky to present his/her powerpoint presentation and undergo the question/answer session. A virtual session, performed via videoconference or similar means, may be allowed in unexpected extenuating circumstances.
 

CHAPTER X
FINAL CONSIDERATIONS

Article 25 – The candidates, winners or not, agree with the free publication / dissemination of all, parts and summaries of the registered papers, posters and presentations, as determined by Alltech, provided the authors are quoted, with no claim of copyrights.

Article 26 – The candidates are liable to respond to any action or lawsuit relative to the originality or plagiarism of the submitted paper, exempting and indemnifying Alltech of all responsibility in such cases.

Paragraph 1 –Winners agree that prizes, papers, posters and presentations will be made public and used in future promotion by Alltech, including but not limited to names, images and content.

Article 27 – The papers (printed and electronic copies) and documents sent to Alltech by the candidates will not be returned.

Article 28 – Before the announcement of the winner, Alltech may verify the authenticity of the information contained in the pre-registration and enrollment forms.

Article 29 – If the winner gives up his/her prize, even for reasons beyond his/her will, he/she is not entitled to any kind of indemnification or reimbursement for the prize that was not used, to transfer it to third parties, or to postpone it.

Article 30 – Other cases will be defined by the Prize Organizing Committee within Alltech.
