Distillers dried grains: a sustainable energy source

[Lexington, Kentucky] - Of the 300 million metric tons (mmt) of maize produced each year, the United States currently uses almost 16% to process ethanol. The production method most widely used is a form of fermentation that uses dry grinding, which creates a valuable co-product - distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS). Some 3.2mmt of DDGS are being used in the animal feed industry to create a high-energy, high-protein feed ingredient for pigs and poultry.

Alltech appoints three new general managers in the Asia-Pacific region

[Lexington, Kentucky] - Alltech is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Cemlyn Martin as general manager for South Asia. Martin has built a distinguished career with Alltech holding several roles with the company throughout the Asia-Pacific region. He joined Alltech in November 1999 as enzymes manager for Asia-Pacific. In 2001, he became general manager for Alltech India, establishing the company's office and sales operations.

Antibiotic alternative helps reduce beef scours

[Lexington, KY] - Until recently, beef cattle producers around the world have relied heavily on the use of antibiotic growth promoters (AGPs) in order to treat scours in their operations. On January 1, 2006, the European Union put into effect a total ban on AGPs in feed, and while the FDA has not implemented this regulation, many US beef producers have begun to incorporate alternative feeding strategies.

Poultry specialist receives Medal of Excellence

[Lexington, Kentucky] - Professor Peter Ferket of North Carolina State University, USA, has been awarded the 2006 Alltech Medal of Excellence. For the past 16 years, Alltech has presented a Medal of Excellence Award to a scientist for his or her exceptional research into natural and advanced solutions in animal health. The medal was presented to Professor Ferket at the opening of Alltech's Annual Feed Industry Symposium, in Lexington, Kentucky, USA, on Monday, April 24th, 2006.
