FISH FARMING EXPERT: Feed selection for high density recirculation systems

The palatability, performance and pollution characteristics of a feed in high density recirculation systems are critical to the success of the production unit. Intensive freshwater recirculation aquaculture systems (RAS) principally have a water treatment system that consists of a solid removal or mechanical filter, a biofilter, a degassing unit and an oxygenation unit.

IRISH FARMERS MONTHLY: Promoting rumen health to maximise beef finishing efficiency

With short-term beef prices looking very unpredictable, there is now a greater need for beef finishers to look inside their own farm gate to drive performance and economic efficiencies. On the positive side, energy prices seem to be relatively good value; however, silage quality seems to be an issue on many farms, writes Richard Dudgeon, beef specialist, Alltech Ireland.

WORLD POULTRY: Improve broiler bone strength through nutrition

The incidence of leg weakness and broken bones is a serious problem in the poultry industry worldwide and causes huge economic loss each year. Modern broilers grow three to four times faster than previous generations. How can producers ensure that birds develop adequate bone strength through nutrition?

BREWER AND DISTILLER INTERNATIONAL: The Station Works Brewery, Newry...an expansion in prospect

Following the untimely passing of Lord Ballyedmond in March 2014, the family ultimately began to reorganise their overall business, and thus it came to pass that in July 2015 both the Newry and Great Corby enterprises were sold to Dr Pearse Lyons of Alltech.

INTERNATIONAL DAIRY TOPICS: Minimising hypocalcaemia in the transition cow

There are numerous factors that affect fertility and reproductive performance of dairy cows, including genetics, environment and nutrition. The transition period is one of the most stressful and physiologically demanding times in the cow's production cycle and is the time when metabolic disturbances are common.

WORLD FISHING & AQUACULTURE: Coppens International in compliance with ASC

International aquatic feed solutions provider, Coppens International, is now officially in compliance with the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) Freshwater Trout Standard for responsible aquaculture. Achieving ASC compliance, following an independent assessment, comes shortly after the addition of Coppens International to the family of global animal health and nutrition company, Alltech.

INTERNATIONAL ANIMAL HEALTH JOURNAL: A glimpse of how agribusiness can feed the world

As part of the agricultural community, veterinarians are frequently asked to speak at meetings, write papers or even in casual interactions, explain if farming and farmers are ready to feed the world. Not just the world today, but the world of 2050 or 2100.

WORLD POULTRY: Industry searches for new Histomoniasis control strategies

Following the ban of antibiotic use in the animal feed industry by the European Union in the early 2000s and the recent removal of the arsenical drug Histostat Nitarsone from the US market by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA), the need for novel control strategies against disease is evident. Since the removal of Histostat in late 2015, US poultry producers are seeing an increase in flock morality due to Histomoniasis.

FEEDINFO: Alltech Crop Science opens new facility in Brazil

On Sept.13, Alltech opened a crop science production facility in Uberlândia, Brazil. The new plant will increase production capacity by 150 percent, reaching an annual production of 10 million liters as well as supplying the entire Central- West and Northeast Regions of Brazil more efficiently.

SUSTAINABLE AQUACULTURE MAGAZINE: Boosting Omega-3 uptake with organic minerals

Organic forms of trace mineral have been demonstrated to have higher bioavailability and tissue storage when compared to their inorganic counterparts. This is of primary importance when it comes to their nutritional performance in aquaculture feeds. Organic trace minerals increase bioavailability while promoting performance, reducing mineral loading in diets and decreasing waste discharge.
