Increasing emphasis is being placed on hygiene levels at the farm, slaughter and processing facilities since this has obvious implications for human health. For example, within the European Union, salmonella testing and controls are currently being implemented.

Reduced bacterial load in barn and on carcass
Increasingly, the importance of safety on farm is being embraced for safety at the dinner table. Many countries have implemented policies geared towards reducing bacterial loads, such as Salmonella populations, and farms have witnessed a change in their pigs. Proper hygiene on farm can prevent bacterial contamination and additionally, the inclusion of proper ingredients in food animal diets is an earlier step in the prevention process. Such measures reduce the likelihood of bacterial contamination and carcass residues in meats, such as chicken, pork, beef and fish. These steps will ultimately reduce health risks to humans
