Plaque and award given in his honor
[Lexington, KENTUCKY]- “His excellence speaks for itself”, Dr. Lee Todd, President of the University of Kentucky spoke of Dr. William Markesbery at Dr. Markesbery’s Memorial Service on March 6, 2010. Dr. Todd continued, “There is no question that Dr. Markesbery is best known for his groundbreaking Alzheimer’s disease work and his dedication to the aging population.” Dr. Markesbery opened UK’s Sanders-Brown Center on Aging in 1979, held the Commonwealth Chair in Aging, and was a professor of neurology, pathology, neurosurgery, anatomy and neurobiology in the UK College of Medicine.

Alltech, global animal health and nutrition company, is recognizing Dr. Markesbery’s innovative career in Alzheimer’s by awarding another individual who has completed great effort in that field with the annual William Markesbery Award for Student Research in Neurodegenerative Disease. President and founder of Alltech, Dr. Pearse Lyons spoke of Dr. Markesbery’s commendable work, “Dr. Markesbery always listened. He was always supportive. He pioneered some of our work with Sel-Plex. His work was revolutionary and he will be truly missed.”
The Dr. William Markesbery Memorial Plaque will be presented to his family at Alltech’s 26th International Animal Health and Nutrition Symposium on May 19, 2010. In addition, the annual William Markesbery Award for Student Research in Neurodegenerative Disease will be unveiled at Alltech’s Symposium. This award will be open to University of Kentucky Graduate and Undergraduate students who are actively involved or interested in neuroscience, and will be granted to the best essay or study proposal in the general area of neurodegeneration. Alltech’s Symposium is an opportunity for delegates to interact and exchange experiences with fellow industry professionals. This Symposium marks Alltech’s 30th anniversary and three decades of primacy in science.
