[Dublin, IRELAND] – With a current annual growth rate of over 8.8% and a projected additional requirement of 40 million metric tonnes of produce by 2030, aquaculture faces a number of challenges if it is to remain a sustainable industry. Under the overriding theme of ‘The Sustainability Principle’, the aquaculture session at Alltech’s 25th International Animal Health and Nutrition Symposium (May 17-20, 2009) will look at new ways of meeting the requirements of today’s demanding aquaculture markets, while continuing to satisfy international traceability and food safety standards.
“Fish currently contributes to approximately 20% of the human population’s animal protein intake and this is on the increase. Traditional fisheries are over or fully exploited yet current market pressures are further pushing aquaculture producers to improve production parameters and reduce costs. The aquaculture session at Alltech’s Symposium deals with the provision of practical solutions to these issues and features the science and its application in the industry”, explained John Sweetman of Alltech Aqua’s European Division
Leading academics and industry experts will offer research-based advice on: meeting the demand for aquaculture production over the next 20 years; sustainability through feeding novel proteins; enhancing mucin protection in fish; stress adaptation: physiology, endocrinology, biochemistry; and management strategies to combat disease challenges and sea lice infections in salmonids.
Among the speakers are: I. Nengas, Hellenic Centre for Marine Research, Greece; C. Wallace, Marine Harvest, Scotland, UK; B. Peterson, USDA, USA; S. Rider, The University of Plymouth, UK; and D. Sanchez, Alicorp SAA, Argentina.
