During symposium we brought our beef industry attendees together for a discussion dinner, paired with the delicious Lyons Farm Fillet of Beef Wellington. The topic of discussion was sustainability in the global beef industry. Through the participation of attendees from North America, Europe and Latin America we were able to benefit from a variety of different viewpoints on the sustainability of using antibiotics, hormones and other growth promoters in beef production as we look to the future in 2020.

The world’s population is quickly increasing, by the year 2050 the population is expected to increase to 9 billion people! High quality protein and other nutrients are needed to feed this growing population as the current food system in place cannot sustain this influx. Becky Timmons of Alltech, sees this challenge as an opportunity for the agriculture industry to sustainably provide the necessary nutrients for this growing population.

Growing from 50 layers to 4 million layers, Hickman's Family Farm in Arizona is an example of how being transparent can not only boost a company's image, but their sales as well. People want to know where their food comes from and they want to feel good about it. Allowing the end consumer into the farmer's world can earn their trust and loyalty, and in turn, their business. Clint Hickman and his family farm have taken this challenge head on, teaching lessons along the way.

How will we feed 3 billion new people within the next 40 years?

An article in the recent edition of the International Food and Agribusiness Management Association Review provides a new platform for considering this question. Authors Aidan Connolly, vice president of corporate accounts at Alltech, and Kate Phillips-Connolly, Centre for Global Business Systems, Trinity College, Dublin, have organized seven key obstacles under the acronym GLIMPSE.  They provide a thorough examination of each obstacle and the associated opportunities.
