Norman neighs hello to Belgium

Norman neighs hello to Belgium Norman meeting the three equine veterinarian nutritionists Sofie Dupont, Myriam Hesta and Wendy Wambacq in front of a patient at the horse clinic.

Norman neighed hello to Belgium! As he trotted through the streets of the capital city Brussels, Norman took everything in, from the wonderful architecture, friendly people and beautiful floral designs. Norman was very excited to be in the capital of the European Union.

Norman had an appointment and had to gallop to it as he was tight for time. It was then he saw the breed of horse he had been keeping his eyes peeled for. There it was, opposite him on the road, a Belgian Draft Horse. Norman was aware that the Belgian Draft Horse is popular in America, and it outnumbers all the other draft breed horses combined in the States. Norman had been eager to spot one in its native land, so he was thrilled when he got to neigh hello in French.

When Norman visited the Department of Internal Medicine and Clinical Biology of Large Animals at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (University of Ghent) he told everyone about his meeting with the Draft horse. After a small lunch the veterinarians explained to Norman that the department is world famous due to its high-tech medical and surgical care for horses. A new “Equine Nutrition Service” has recently been established and Norman wanted to find out more.

The veterinarians then explained that the initiative originates from an increased awareness amongst horse owners and veterinarians. Nutrition is an important factor in the health management of horses. Norman found out that healthy (sport) horses as well as horses suffering from specific health problems may benefit from a tailored diet. Professor Hesta, of the Laboratory of Animal Nutrition of Ghent University set up the “Equine Nutrition Service”. Horse owners as well as veterinarians can contact this “Equine Nutrition Service” for specified feed advice.

Cavalor, Alltech’s Offical Partner of the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games™ 2014 in Normandy supports and works together with this initiative. Over the past 20 years, Cavalor has built an international reputation as a world leader in equine nutrition for high-performance horses, and is a loyal customer of Alltech. Norman thought that this was an excellent example of how veterinary science and nutritional science can join forces for optimal animal welfare and performance. While on site Norman took part in the programme and was delighted to find that he is in optimal health for the rest of his journey to the Games. With that it was time for Norman to say goodbye and begin the trot to his next destination.
