Margie Engle is a ten-time AGA Rider of the Year and she has seen a few National Horse Shows in her career. "The ring looks beautiful. It looks almost like the garden did years ago," she said, describing the show ring at the Alltech Arena in the Kentucky Horse Park. She will be competing this evening in the $250,000 Alltech Grand Prix here in Lexington, Kentucky.
Margie spoke to us at length about the differences between the Alltech Arena and Madison Square Garden, former home of the historic National Horse Show. "At the Garden, once you got in the ring it was fantastic but we didn’t have a whole lot of space to work the horses. It was a really tiny space."
Engle is recovering from a broken ankle and doesn’t have as much leg as she would like but she is optimistic about her chances in the Grand Prix. She is undoubtedly one of the most determined and resilient riders out there. As a young girs she cleaned out stalls in exchange for riding lessons and has a history of getting right back on the horse following some very serious injuries.
