We’re less than a year away from the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games™ 2014 in Normandy, and preparations are well-underway to welcome the 2000+ equine and human athletes as well as the 500,000 international spectators expected. And a few people got a sneak peek at all the preparation last week.
Ten journalists from the U.S., Canada and the U.K. toured Normandy from Oct. 9-12, learning a bit about its culture and heritage, as well as what they could expect while covering the Games. Events will take place at several locations in the Normandy region, so it was valuable for the journalists to understand which venues will be used for each of the eight disciplines of the Games and the travel distance between event locations.
When they weren’t touring one of the Games’ competition sites, they were immersing themselves in Normandy’s gastronomic and Calvados making traditions. They also had the opportunity to spend some time on the D-Day beaches with World War II historians and will likely never forget their mode of transportation for this part of the tour – vintage jeeps.
Diana De Rosa, a veteran equestrian photojournalist who has covered every World Equestrian Games and the Summer Olympics, did a great job of recapping the trip in a series of articles last week. De Rosa covered every aspect of the trip, from background information about the Games to the history of the region and more.
Through her articles, you’re able to get a sense of the scope of this event, the largest equestrian sporting event in the world held within a region with such a strong equine industry and rich history. She even has a photo gallery from her trip. If you want to check out all of the work from her time in Normandy, you can check here.
The Games run from Aug. 23 – Sept. 7, 2014, but buzz is building already. You can visit the official Games website for more information, and get your Games merchandise now. Tickets will be available to the general public beginning on Nov. 18!
