The world’s population is quickly increasing, by the year 2050 the population is expected to increase to 9 billion people! High quality protein and other nutrients are needed to feed this growing population as the current food system in place cannot sustain this influx. Becky Timmons of Alltech, sees this challenge as an opportunity for the agriculture industry to sustainably provide the necessary nutrients for this growing population.

Antibiotics may Impede Trade with Korea

In June 2012, the Government of South Korea announced a total ban on inclusion of non-therapeutic antibiotics in feed for livestock. The action by the Ministry of Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MFAFF) in S. Korea corresponds to the EU ban on antibiotic growth promoters issued in January 2006. The EU directive followed similar restrictions imposed by Nordic countries between 1986 and 1998 and also by Switzerland in 1999.

Alltech's Global Feed Summary

Aidan Connolly, VP of Alltech describes the Global Feed Summary that Alltech conducted during 2011 and released early in 2012.

Last year Aidan Connolly asked colleagues in Alltech's offices worldwide to help create a report on the global tonnage of animal feed produced. With offices and distributors in 128 countries he was able to put together a very comprehensive summary. That's not to say that it was easy. Data was collected from thousands of feed mills and manufacturers and compiled into totals for species, countries and regions.

Livestock producers are under attack. Activist groups like the Humane Society of the United States and PETA are actively working to erode public opinion of animal agriculture and meat, milk and egg consumption. Furthermore, they lobby for additional regulations that will drive up food prices. Similar efforts in Europe have resulted in higher food prices. However, consumer preferences have not changed. The end result is increased importation and a loss of food security.
