Admittedly, I did not have the most typical path to a PhD program in the animal sciences. As a high school student, I knew I wanted to work with horses, so I applied to Cazenovia College’s program in equine business management. While at Cazenovia, I became involved as a teaching assistant for the equine anatomy and physiology class and in a feeding trial for Cargill. Interacting with students on understanding concepts from class and creating new knowledge through research really excited me. These experiences in teaching and research prompted me to look into graduate school.

Rosemary Gambino is from Pattison, Texas which is 40 miles outside Houston. She lives with her family on Rose Hill Ranch www.santagertrudiscattle.com. They raise purebred Santa Gertrudis cattle and we sell bulls for herd sires, heifers for breeding stock, show heifers and calves sold as stockers. Third generation in the beef industry, Rosemary is currently the chairman of the National Beef Ambassador Program for American National CattleWomen, and her greatest honor was to serve as President of Texas CattleWomen.

Sandhill Pines Farm is a 80 acre farm in Prairie du Sac, WI. Named for the cranes and pine trees on the farm. Jon Sawle and his family have been raising registered Highland cattle since 2002. They have focused on improving our genetics through Artificial insemination, performance monitoring and showing.

Currently at 10 cows, they are now looking to increase the Highland herd and start crossing Highlands to produce F1 females for northern grass-fed operations and network with other producers.

Moving Cows Home

This picture was submitted by Samantha Smith of her son and two sets of grandkids. Taken on a beautiful day in mid-February near Oakley, Kansas, the family moved cows about seven miles before a Midwestern snow storm was expected. The grandkids all enjoyed taking turns riding horses and riding in the ATV.

Samantha has about 130 cows and also has a background feeder calf operation. They grow wheat, corn, mile, alfafa and cane hay.
