Pig Challenges

Sow Productivity

Productivity of sows is normally assessed according to the number of pigs weaned per litter, per year or per lifetime. A sow should wean at least 30 piglets per year, or 50-60 per lifetime. It is therefore important to increase the number of piglets born alive, to minimize stillbirths and pre-weaning mortality, as well as the number of empty or non-productive days. Nutrition, housing, management, health, immunity and stockmanship all have an effect and determine whether the animals achieve their genetic potential.
