Beef Cattle Challenges

Protein Supply

Microbial protein is the most efficient source of protein for beef cattle. Rumen microbes require a steady supply of non-protein nitrogen (NPN), as well as amino acids and an energy source, to produce microbial protein that is directly available to the animal. However, because excess NPN can result in raised blood urea levels and reduced production, it is important to ensure an optimal yet consistent supply throughout the day. Subsequently, feed ingredients that optimize amino acid and microbial protein supply should be included in the ration. Optimizing rumen function can help maximize animal health and performance.
