Gut Efficiency

The interactions between intestinal microflora, gut morphology, the immune system and nutrient uptake will have a major influence on the animal’s health and performance. Enteritis and poor gut morphology, caused by either plant protein rich diets or pathogen attack, can lead to inefficient feed conversion. Further, the repair of these damaged enterocytes is an energy consuming activity which in turn directs valuable resources from growth and performance to the more immediate urgency of tissue repair and maintenance.

Our understanding of the structure and function of the intestine, its interaction with infectious diseases, anti-nutritional dietary components and stress enable the deployment of technologies that can protect and nurture a healthy gut environment, so promoting optimal efficiency. Providing optimal gut status through nutrition and protection plays a critical role in efficient aquaculture production strategies.
