A day in a life of an Alltech employee working on a dairy farm
Katarzyna Bagińska, Technical Sales Manager - Poland
Working at a dairy farm is one of the most demanding jobs I know. Every day, farmers have to control a number of factors influencing their final production: they milk, assist during deliveries, inseminate, cure, feed, manage and make decisions that influence the development, direction and the future of the farm. As a regular visitor to dairy farms, I honestly really admire them. Every day I suggest the best possible solutions and support their view to consistently improve performance. It means spending a lot of time in cow barns analyzing, counting, calculating and formulating…
Testing faeces is one of the best and basic indicators for analyzing rumen activity, checking the functionality of rumen microorganisms and seeing the effectiveness of the chemical processes taking place in these huge fermentors.
The most important factor at this stage of my work is the accurate interpretation of indicators. “Everyone is allowed to reformulate and many try it, but only some are able to reformulate and achieve the right results” – nice words to hear from your client but it’s very true also. We are fully committed to our work whether it’s winter or summer, or day or night. Even at the end of the day after a full day’s work, about to head to dinner, with smart clothes on… I can get a phone call saying: “we have an emergency – its diarrhoea, we have looked for possible causes, there are no obvious signs, please come immediately!!!” I drive straight to the farm, without time to even change my shoes! In my line of work the animals are my top priority; my shoes have to come with me!
A significant part of on-farm activity for an Alltech dairy expert is the use of sieves which allow determining the structure of the total mixed ration (TMR). The result of the test allows us to draw conclusions about the size of grinded silos, and how this affects the performance of the equipment when removing the feed from the silo and the preparation of the mixed ration. Application of TMR sieves make it relatively easy and quick to get a first look if cows are provided with structural fiber. But the results of sieving cannot be the sole criteria for assessing the effectiveness of the diet. Hereinafter we need to define some visual factors such as body condition score, feed intake, the manure structure and manure and hoof health. And of course we have to consider such benchmarks as the daily milk yield and quality characteristics of milk (fat, protein, lactose and milk urea).
