    Agriculture is responsible for a large amount of our current land and water usage. As the population grows, the environmental impact of agriculture will inevitably grow with it. In order to protect our natural resources and ensure that we conserve wildlife and natural ecosystems, we must produce food sustainably.

    Efficiency and productivity are key to feeding our growing population while minimizing agricultural use of land, water, energy and other resources. Animal nutrition plays a critical role in this effort. Properly nourished animals are healthier, grow faster, use feed more efficiently and produce meat, milk and eggs that are more nutritious.

    Conserving Land, Water and Fertilizer by Improving Feed Efficiency

    Solid State Fermentation

    Most livestock are fed grains. It takes a considerable amount of land, water and energy to produce grains for animal feed. To minimize the amount of resources required to produce meat, we must maximize the feed efficiency of our animals.

    Natural enzymes produced through solid state fermentation can break down cellulose and other fibers. This means that animals obtain more nutrients from existing feeds.

    Rumen Efficiency

    Yeast is scientifically proven to increase the feed efficiency of dairy cows, beef cattle and other ruminants by stabilizing the rumen environment. Yeast consume sugar and oxygen, both of which inhibit the activity of anaerobic rumen microbes.

    Improving Animal Health

    Animal health is essential for profitable livestock production. It is also important for minimizing the environmental impact of meat production. When animals do not grow to their full potential, land, water and feed resources are wasted.     Reducing Soil and Water Pollution

    Intensive livestock operations produce large quantities of animal waste, which can include high levels of ammonia, nitrogen, phosphate and trace minerals. Proper animal nutrition can minimize levels of these pollutants.

    Organic Trace Minerals

    Organic trace minerals are more easily absorbed by the animal and can therefore be provided at lower levels than inorganic minerals (sulfates, oxides). This means that less of the mineral ends up in the soil and water. Trace minerals include metals like copper, selenium, manganese and chromium.

    Nitrogen and Ammonia

    Undigested plant proteins can result in high levels of nitrogen and ammonia in manure. Nitrogen is a significant problem for water quality, while ammonia causes air quality problems that affect animal and human health. Enzymes can help animals digest and utilize protein. Consequently, less nitrogen and ammonia are released to the environment and farmers can save money by reducing protein in the animal feed.

    Algae and Aquaculture

    Some methods of aquaculture have a very high environmental impact. One common problem is the practice of feeding fish oil or fish meal made up of wild fish. This practice is not sustainable; in the long run it could do more damage to wild fish populations than traditional fishing. Algae has great potential as a replacement for fish oil and fish meal in aquaculture feeds. Removing this pressure on our oceans would go a long way toward building a sustainable aquaculture industry.
